Outward Bound is the leading organization in New Zealand for showing people their full potential through challenge and adventure in the outdoors.
Many people think that Outward Bound consists of a single course, and that only a certain type of person is a good candidate, or will benefit from it. Nothing could be further from the truth. Outward Bound encourages intellectuals to meet physical challenges; extroverts to listen; introverts to reveal themselves; dependent people to find independence; loners to share socially; dreamers to awaken. Is that something for everyone? I certainly think so.
There are several courses available...
- Classic - 21 day full-on traditional Outward Bound experience. The key focus is on development of self awareness and inner strength. This is aimed at 18-26 year olds, but Classic Mature courses are also run for 27+ year olds.
- Mind, Body and Soul - 21 day course, but for 16-18 year olds aimed at helping their transition from school to whatever comes next. This course also qualifies as the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award - Residential project.
- Discovery - 8 day course - condensed version of the Classic course for more mature participants. Focus is more about balance in life. Courses are split into 27+ years and 40+ years.
- Navigator - 8 day course - a leadership development programme those aged over 23 years with at least 3 years work experience.
- Leaps & Bounds - a two tiered course involving teens together with a parent or caregiver. It focuses on communication and learning about each other.
- No Limits - 8 day course for people aged 17-27 years that brings together people who have a disability with those who don't. It focuses on overcoming both team and individual challenges.
There is also a variety of special needs courses to cater to those with physical or mental disabilities.
