education title food technology

Hubbard Foods Ltd recognises that Food Technology is one of the keys to New Zealand's future. As a degree course, B. Tech (Food Tech) is internationally recognised and offers unique career opportunities. There is a shortage of experienced Food Technologists and this has not changed in the last 5+ years.

What is it?
Food Technology is often misunderstood. It is not home economics, a new take on a Chef's course or one that qualifies you as a dietitian or nutritionist. It takes science a step further into its application in the food industry. It is about the study of food processing with subjects such as food chemistry, engineering, marketing, product development, food storage, packaging and project management among others. It is a wide-ranging professional degree course that offers its graduates career opportunities in a vast number of areas.

If you are still at school and you are interested in this degree, the most appropriate subjects to take are:

  • Calculus
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • Statistics

English and Biology are also useful but not essential.

Massey University offers the original Food Technology degree in New Zealand, but now there are various alternatives. Please contact your local university to find out more information about these options.

Food Technology Scholarships
At Hubbards we are passionate about food (especially breakfast!), so enthusiasm about food technology naturally follows. To show our support for budding food technologists and to encourage people to pursue this career path, Hubbards offers a Food Technology Scholarship each year to students enrolling at Massey University. These scholarships contribute $1,000 per year for the four years of study.

To date, 13 people have been awarded these scholarships.

We love to read about what encourages and inspires people to choose a career with food so if you are interested – please email us with why you want to be a Food Technologist and include proof of enrolment.
